The following will be the course curriculum for Health and Wellness at Lancaster Christian Academy for the 2015-2016 School year.
Health provides students with a deeper understanding of age appropriate health issues, and equips them to better deal with the social and emotional adjustments of middle and high school. Topics covered include
communication skills and healthy relationship building; risk assessment, alcohol, and other drug prevention (including binge drinking); stress and anger management; suicide and self-injury prevention; personal values
development; and human sexuality & sexual health.
Health builds upon the information covered in previous Health Education courses, with an emphasis upon a developmentally appropriate examination of health issues relevant to high school sophomores. Students
will build their knowledge base and skills for addressing issues of dating and healthy relationships; stress management and healthy sleep habits; and understanding adolescent psychological growth and development.
This course will utilize various movement forms to help students achieve an understanding of the six dimensions of wellness (social, emotional, intellectual, physical, environment, and occupational). In addition, an
emphasis will be placed on the role of physical activity in preventing disease and disability. The Major areas of study of this course include: Strength Training, CPR/First Aid, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Training, and
Group Initiatives.
This course will emphasize the need for students to take responsibility for their health. In addition, students will focus on the risks and consequences related to physical activity and personal behavior.
This course potentially represents the last, organized, Physical Education experience in many students’ academic careers. As such, students will design a personal fitness program that incorporates key knowledge from their
previous experience. Students will incorporate both health and fitness principles within their personal physical fitness program.
